Surface Coatings for the Pulp and Paper Industry

Pumps, valves, guides, rollers and cutting tools used in pulp and paper production equipment suffer from severe abrasion.

In packaging applications, the loss of blade sharpness can cause costly downtime and part replacement expenditure. Tests carried out by CATRA (Cutlery & Allied Trades Research Association) showed that Hardide extended the life of a paper cutting disk blade 140-fold when it was used continuously for over 10 weeks compared to 12 hours for a standard blade.

In self-sharpening cutting tool applications, a thin and hard coating is applied to one side of the blade, leaving the other side uncoated. Wear on the uncoated side maintains the sharpness of the blade edge.

In the CATRA tests, the depth of cut of Hardide-coated blades increased with usage.
